What's a flail mower?
A flail mower is a type of compact tractor attachment that connects to the tractor PTO shaft. The PTO flail mower includes a rotating drum that spins. Attached to this drum are rows of flails. Flails are hardened pieces of metal shaped in either a "Y" or "T" shape.
What are the advantages of a flail mower?
Flail mowers off several advantages over a conventional rotary mower, particularly in specific situations, including:
Places where flying debris must be kept to a minimum. Flail mowers don't throw up much rubbish as the rotating drum that the flails are attached to is housed in a protective steel container.
Flail mowers, and particularly verge flail mowers can be angled to cut banks. They can also be angled to trim bushes and other shrubbery and even higher hedges if a hedge flail mower is used. This means that they are handy for maintenance departments or people that want to do landscaping using a single tractor attachment.
Wherever there's potential to hit hard objects, the flail mower provides benefits over a rotary mower. This is because the flail heads aren't fixed rigidly to the rotating drum. Rather, they are attached via a moving hinge, so that when the flail hits debris such as a stone or tree stump, it will simply bound off of it. Therefore flails don't need to be replaced often, and even if one of them gets damaged, it's simply a matter of replacing an individual flail head, so a flail mowers are cost efficient in the long run.
Flail mowers excel in thick brush and scrub areas due to the sturdiness of the individual flails and how many flail heads rotating together can easily rip up samplings of up to two inches in width.
